…The idea of a promotion usually focuses only on the positive without touching on the RESPONSIBILITIES that come with it
From the “basic” requirements of just showing up for dance practice and learning the moves TO being UPGRADED to captain
Yay! I can be called a Captain
Well this is what it meant…
Responsible for 20ish people
PLEASING my team
Registering for competitions (12 competitions)
Creating a set full of new formations and choreography
COMPARING myself to previous captains and their sets
The actual performances
THINKING ABOUT THE TEAM ALL DAY versus a few hours day
Putting the team FIRST, before my personal life
Every decision being questioned
FEAR of failure
”I CAN’T DO THIS”
“I HAVE TO BE PERFECT”
VCU Bhangra was known to be one of the best dance teams, winning competition after competition. (Just so you have a frame of reference)
That PRESSURE that I CONSTANTLY felt was REAL to me
With a constant physical and emotional stress, my body hit a point of survival mode.
With the stresses of school, no sleep and focus on the team…I was in overdrive.
Can YOU relate?
Having to be exceptional in multiple things in your life?
Parenting? Work? Finances? School? Grades? Sports? Family? etc.
Put a few of these on your plate..AND YOUR PLATE IS FULL
Important to say though…!
Performing those 9 minute sets
Building a family with MY TEAM
The positive gains from school, work, family, parenting, sports…all of the above is PRICELESS
How are you addressing the stresses that come with those challenges?
I want you to consider…the FIRST piece is to address the BRAIN.
SOCIAL SKILLS. COGNITIVE THINKING. DECISIONS. EMOTIONS.
All this…and MORE, your brain controls and stress LITERALLY turns those skills off.
Priceless moments are WORTH EVEN more when you take care of the premise of your BEING
It is time for your BRAIN to get some love and attention!
